DEATHWORM

Posted by Ansel Mar. 27, 2008 @ 7:18 PM EDT

This is one of my favorite flash games ever, and as of a few days ago, I'm working with I-smel to create a better-animated, better-coded, and all-around improved Deathworm. It's really fun to just draw and draw for this, especially since there's a ton of different things to do and I don't get bored with it. We're going to try and get it sponsored by someone, since we both like money.

Here's a completely unhelpful screenshot which might be interesting if you could actually see what it is.

Sprite Movies. Ugh.

Posted by Ansel Mar. 25, 2008 @ 6:15 PM EDT

This is not the first time a Newgrounds user has denounced sprite movies, nor will it be the last.

For the most part, sprite movies require no effort. For the most part, sprite movies are created by 11-year olds who don't know how to use Flash and are too lazy to learn how. For the most part, sprite movies are unfunny video game parodies, mind-blowingly badly made; and should drift through the Portal unnoticed and unimportant.

But what really bugs me is when these movies win awards and are frontpaged. FRONTPAGED. Tom Fulp often showcases movies he thinks have fallen under the radar or should be more widely appreciated. A website devoted to Flash work should not showcase some of the least impressive things it's capable of. I'd rather see a 5-second experiment using a new and innovative technique than a 10-minute parade of copyrighted artwork using terrible jokes and terrible animation.

@ "spriters," who like to pretend they're some sort of legitimate artist, STOP MAKING SPRITE MOVIES.
@ Tom and voters, STOP SUPPORTING THEM.

I love spontaneous movies.

Posted by Ansel Mar. 22, 2008 @ 4:55 PM EDT

Watch.

Dropped toast is the bane of my existence. Every time, it lands face down. Every time, I weep bitter tears as I numbly drop a new piece of bread into the toaster and perform a small funerary ritual for the now-dirtied piece of breakfast.

Anyway, I had this idea yesterday and decided to make it today. I love doing things like that. It took me about an hour or so to finish the whole thing. My only regret is that I'm not that good at drawing or animation, and so I can't pull off anything of high quality fast enough so I don't get sick of it.

Larvae is turning out to be quite fun to animate.

Larvae

Posted by Ansel Mar. 17, 2008 @ 5:36 PM EDT

That's the title of my new flash :3 Unless I come up with something more imaginative. It should be done in a month or two. I'm using music that inspired me. It's by ZekeySpaceyLizard.

I'm also going to make something for Pico Day. Probably Dadnme or Tankmen, since I like them more than Pico and can't think of anything for the Bots.

I really hate seeing crappy Flash ads. I could do far better. I know I could. And instead, someone is being paid to take some bad art and tween it around the stage a few times. Also, there is one ad that I particularly despise. BREAD AND BUTTER. Every few pages, there's that dancing bread with its pulsating buttocks. It's not even that crappy, but I really hate seeing it by now.

New screeny from Larvae, if you care to see. I'm actually somewhat disturbed by what I'm managing to come up with for this movie. Reading Nausicaa of the Vally of Wind at a young age has imprinted deformed insects onto my brain forever

Userpage Flash Banners For Fun and Profit

Posted by Ansel Mar. 13, 2008 @ 8:09 PM EDT

This is definitely something I'd be interested in. It's great being able to upload your own image, but imagine being able to have your own flash banner above your page. It could be a movie, a game, an animated image, anything!

I am FULLY AWARE of the potential for abuse. Seizure flashes, auto-spawning popups, etc. However, first of all, there could be a system in place much like the one for posting news on the frontpage-- unless you've gotten flash through the Portal, you can't upload a banner. Alternatively, they could be checked by someone before they're uploaded onto the site, though that could be time-consuming, considering how many would be uploaded. Almost certainly, SOME kind of review system would be necessary. An ability to flag abusive banners, maybe?

I think it would definitely add a lot to anyone's userpage. I'd really like to be be able to have some kind of animated logo thing at the top of this page, maybe a quick game people could play.

Plz consider my idea, Tom :3
I'm sure you've thought about it and decided it wouldn't be worth the trouble, but I think it would be a really great thing, even if it had to be restricted somewhat.

Also, here's a screen of a movie I started. I'll probably finish this one, cause it has big larva bug things, which will be fun to animate.

Thin mints are incredible.

Posted by Ansel Mar. 9, 2008 @ 2:58 PM EDT

More importantly, Tom Fulp is a really nice guy and unbanned me early. <3

Thin mints. I'm eating them right now. Girl scout cookies are simple amazing. I also have a box of Samoas that I'll inhale when I'm done. Delicious minty goodness.

I want someone to make the wads from Accepted. I'd buy that shit in bulk.

I saw the Academy Award-nominated Animated Shorts a few days ago. The first one was about a man who's about to die, and is "saved" just before Death arrives by a salesman who tries to sell him a bogus machine that will supposedly send him to heaven. Death arrives, and kills the salesman instead. It was 3D CGI, which is always a putoff for me, but it was really well-done and pretty interesting. Watch it.

The next was set to an interview with John Lennon recorded by a 14-year-old who snuck into the Walrus's hotel room with a tape recorder. A student made an mostly 2D animation to this tape. It's mostly visual metaphors and whatall related to what John's saying and expressing. Very stylish, very cool. Watch.

Madame Tutli-Putli was incredibly bizarre and incredible. It was my favorite of all of them, definitely. This woman with huge piles of luggage gets on this train filled with these scarred, creepish passengers, apparently burn victims. The train is raided by dark, slimy people who steal the organs of the other people on the train and then take everything else, leaving the woman alone on the train with only a moth. It's like a nightmare, actually. That's definitely what it reminded me of. It's stop-motion animation as well, which I love, so that's a plus. Lots of odd, sickening jokes. Two legless men sitting in their own suitcases playing chess. A little scarred boy reading a book called "How to handle your enemies." God, I loved that film a lot. Watch it. Part 1. Part 2

The last one was called Peter and the Wolf, set to the famous music by the same name. I did not enjoy it, and I don't even want to waste my time describing it. A boy captures a wolf. the end.

Go see them, you won't regret it.

EDIT- I just found out Peter and the Wolf won. That's rijankulous. It really was the worst of them, and I don't see how it won at all.

a screen from Madame-Tutli-Putli.

Abyul, come in Abyul

Posted by Ansel Mar. 2, 2008 @ 4:50 PM EST

I'm banned for posting in a spam topic, as usual. Like, seriously, that's all I ever get banned for. It's a lame rule and I think it should be repealed. If I want to post in some alt's flamebait topic, I think I should be able to without fear of being banned. I'm not "feeding the flames" or any bullshit like that, I'm usually either responding to someone else's post or telling the OP to read the rules or something. It makes no sense for me to tell someone what they should've done or somethign helpful like that and then get banned for it. MODS, I'M LOOKIN AT YOU.

I'm going to buy a laptop with my Supertank sponsorship $$$. Somewhere in the range of $700-$1000. If anyone has any suggestions, tell me. And please, don't link me to anything with Vista on it, and especially not a Mac. Macs are smug and pretentious, and I don't like using them unless I have to. Vista apparently has compatibility issues with everything, but has noted problems with Flash, and since that's the program I use most often, I'd really rather not have to put up with crashes and other such nonsense.

In my corner of the US of A, it's suddenly become cold, misty, and rainy, after weeks of bitter, evil cold and then two bright, sunny, joyful days. That's kind of nice, but it makes my weekly-ish bicycle quests for snacks less fun. However, when I get home, the delicious sheen of cherry sours makes it all okay again and all is right with the world.

Zebra Cakes are amazing.

I'm trying to come up with a movie for Pico Day this year. Probably something about Tankmen.

so anyway guys, where was i?

Posted by Ansel Feb. 20, 2008 @ 9:46 PM EST

bah. Been a while since I posted here. Supertank is done. DONE. Now the waiting begins-- Snubby is waiting for Armorgames to send him an email, and I am waiting for Armorgames to send Snubby an email so he can send it to me and then we can get money and possibly buy a large yacht and travel the world holding hands, which would be nice. I want to go to Easter Island and see some enigmatic stone faces.

Since I'm done with one immense, 6-month project, I've decided to revive an old one i started almost a year ago. DEFEND YOUR TRUMP. Donald Trump is grossly rich, and it seemed like he'd need something to guard his enormous cash stash against burglars or maurauding imps. I had a grand vision. My affection for large, hydraulic crushing machines led me to create a groundbreaking new game, one that stretched the boundaries of HUMAN IMAGINATION, an impossible, sparkling game in which you got to play as what is essentially an enormous hammer. Rather, TWO enormous hammers, positioned in such a way as to allow them to crush anything between them, including, of course, burglars. Or maurauding imps, or anything else which happened to be entering Trump's enormous stone fortress through the roof. I'll include a screenshot or two.

I'm feeling strangely unmotivated at the moment. With ST, I had the promise of green, rustling cash, which I could possibly bathe in if I was feeling down. However, now, I'm feeling oddly bored and uninterested. I could just be recovering from the last two weeks of hectic, mind-numbing drawing and animating, fueled by coca-cola, ramen noodles, and frequent breaks to go play guitar or something else distracting. I could also just be getting used to the feeling of not being frantic and pressed for time, being able to sleep easily without a burning cat of guilt settling on my icy toes to stare at me until I felt my wrongdoing deeply and vowed to work on Supertank....tomorrow, after I checked my mail, and ate some ice cream, and played Guitar Hero, and played real guitar, and did other such pressing things, and OH LOOK, IT'S 10:30, and I am a growing boy and need my beauty rest, so the guilt-cat must return once again.

If I think of something else to say, it WILL BE SAID.

Also, Here's a screenshot of what's happening right now around here. Yeah, it's small. Blame Newgrounds.

Supertank Lvl 3

I took off the ST demo, because people seemed to think it would ruin anticipation of the game.
